Command Chain-of-Command

The basic chain-of-command of an Armor squad moves from Armor Company Officers to Armor Company Veterans to Armor Squad leaders to Lead Tank to Driver to Gunner.

During Armor Company (training), the Armor Company Commander is responsible for training and leading the squad. XO and Adjutant cover the Company Commander when the Company Commander is not present. Armor Company Veterans cover the Armor Company Command Staff when they are not present. Armor squad leaders, lead tanks, and the rest of personnel are to listen and to follow direction from the person leading the training.

During Armor squads, Armor Company officers will advise, an Armor Company member will be squad lead, and the lead tank will give direction to the squad a whole. (The Armor squad leader and lead tank may be the same Blue Lion.)

Rally and Group up!

Rallying can be very important. It gets the vehicles together so that they can move out as an organized group.
Generally, when everyone is pulling vehicles, you will be given a waypoint to meet the other members of the Armor Squad before moving out.
The generally call of “Group-up” works in a similar fashion, but it means to group up on the Armor squad leader or main tank.
Both commands are meant to organize us into a tight group so that we can be in a group and prepared to engage the enemy.
Straying away from the group not only makes yourself an easier target, but it makes the whole group weaker.

Column Commands

One standard method of moving an Armor squad is in the column formation. This is a list of commands that are given by an Armor squad leader or lead tank.

Form a Column

All vehicles form a loose column formation.
Sundies and lightnings should be near the middle of the column. This is so sundies can be protected and lightnings can be protected as well as provide radar support and/or anti-aircraft support for the rest of the units in the column.

Column Move out

When this command is given, the lead tank moves out. The second tank follows 5-8 tank lengths behind the lead tank. The rest of the column should be within 2-3 vehicle lengths with one another.
This is so if the lead tank hits mines or encounters the enemy, the rest of the column has time to react to the threat.
If the lead tank goes down, the next tank in line becomes the lead tank.

If friendlies try to force their way into the column, let them in and give them room. If they try to force their way to the front of the column, let them through; let them run into the traps and ambushes that the enemy might set for us and let them make first contact with the enemy.

Column Stop

When this command is given, keep spacing and stop in a staggered column behind the lead tank.
We do not want to be stopped in a single file line that aircraft can strafe and hit multiple vehicles in the column easily.
We do not want to stop jammed up against one another so that our vehicles can not move freely.
The lead tank may pull ahead to scout. Stop means STOP. Do not move until you get the column move out order or enemy is engaged.

Right Echelon

This command is to get into the Right Echelon formation. That is to say, you should have your front left bumper 2-3 tank lengths behind and to the right of rear right bumper of the tank in front of you. This will look like the right hand side of a wedge formation.

Left Echelon

This command is to get into the Left Echelon formation. This forms up to the left of the lead tank.

Form a Line

This command is to form a line facing enemy forces. The lead tank will stop. Tanks should alternately go to the left and right sides of the lead tank to form a slightly staggered line on either side of the lead tank. There should be a tank or two distance between tanks so that all tanks can rotate freely without running into each other.

Target Identification, Group-fire, and Immediate Peril recognition and reporting

The firepower of multiple vehicles firing on a target at the same time can take down a target quickly and reduce the firepower of an attacking force significantly enough that as a group we can take down larger less coordinated forces.

If the Armor squad leader or Lead Tank call a target, everyone should fire on that target. The call out will be a target type and a compass direction. You should move so that you can see this target and fire upon it as quickly as possible. Ignore all other targets until that target is down.

Basic Group-fire should be targeted in this order:

a) Closest (biggest) threat first
b) Threats left to right.
c ) Non-threat objects (Deployed sunders and other vehicles not returning fire)

Drivers should call out targets as well, while following the Armor squad leader or Lead Tank targeting directions. If the Armor squad leader or Lead Tank have not called out a target and another Armor squad member has called out a target the fire on that target as a group.

follow the same procedure. Since drivers are focused on driving and what is ahead of them, gunners should worry about immediate peril threats while targeting the group-fire target assigned by the others. Immediate Peril threats include infantry encroaching on the squad vehicles, light assaults approaching from above, unseen flanking or attacks from the rear, and aircraft coming in from above. If possible, the gunner should call out threat type and who might be in the most peril; you can do this through a player’s name or by their squad number (Example: Light Assault! Watch out, Partack!)

Reminder :: Call out type of target, number of targets (no need to call out 1), and compass direction. (Unlike in an infantry squad, we should be close enough together that we do not need to use geographical points to indicate where the compass direction originates from.)

Driver-Gunner Commands

The vehicle driver is considered to be in-charge of their vehicle. The Gunner should follow the driver’s lead in what needs to be done.

Unless you are very used to the driver that you are paired up with, do not jump out to repair until the driver calls out the “rep” command. When the driver calls out “rep” immediately get out of the vehicle and start repairing the vehicle. (HINT: You should always have your repair tool out and ready to go before you jump into a vehicle. Seconds count!)

Deploy Mines

There is some give or take on this one. If one of the crew members of a vehicle sees a good place to plant mines, then discuss who is going to do it and make sure the driver is prepared if the gunner is going to jump out of the vehicle and deploy mines. (HINT: Make sure to be carrying AV mines when running vehicles.)
